Imagining Bay City’s Future

Days ago, I was part of the focus group about how the residents of the town, see it and how could we imagine the future, one of the first things about this exercise was how the people don't see the potential of this forum, because it was just barely 10 people of a city of thousands.

Other good aspect I notice is that behind of this afford was a professional agency looking the exercise and the quality of question. that could be basic but it's a good beginning How you see the county in 5 or 10 years.  the question could be easy to read but, complex to answer.  another good point its they ask in Englis and Spanish knowing that this town its multicultural. other question was what feeling want that people associate with Bay city town, If you were in that perfect future what the newspaper will say about Bay city.

what they told me, that was just one of the session they have in the community, they visit places like a ocean food place, one of the restaurant of steak and talks with local chamber of commerce.

But since I read about innovation or disruption if you ask at people what they want dont always have the answer to be disruptive, they answer as their knowledge has, like Enry Ford say if I was talking with people I will be build a car with more real horses.

Its a good begging and I hope that this project bring tons of opportunities to this town.

If you are wondering what I propose was:

1. Include the rice heritage as attraction
2. Use the long horn as big symbol of town
3. Made baycity as node of activities you could do at the beach and the natural parks.
4. Use the train and rail as attraction.

AI correction, of course I read the correction and looks good to me.

A few days ago, I participated in a focus group about how residents see Bay City and how they imagine its future. The discussion raised an important question: what could our city become, and what would it take to get there?

One of my first observations was the small number of participants. Only about ten people attended the session, despite the city having thousands of residents. That made me wonder whether people knew about the opportunity or understood how their participation could influence the project. I would have liked to see more residents involved in the conversation.

One encouraging aspect was the professional agency guiding the discussion. The questions were straightforward but required careful thought. One asked how we envisioned the community in five or ten years. Although easy to understand, it was not an easy question to answer.

The discussion included questions in both English and Spanish, an important consideration in a multicultural community. Participants were also asked what feelings they wanted people to associate with Bay City. Another question invited us to imagine an ideal future: if that future became reality, what would a newspaper headline say about the city?

These questions encouraged us to think beyond individual improvements and consider the identity we want Bay City to develop.

The organizers explained that this was only one of several conversations taking place throughout the community. They had also visited local businesses, including a seafood restaurant and a steakhouse, and spoken with the local chamber of commerce. Hearing that broader outreach was underway gave me a more complete picture of the effort.

Still, the discussion brought to mind a question from my reading about innovation: is asking people what they want enough to imagine something genuinely different?

In my view, residents’ answers are a starting point, not the entire plan. People describe the future through the experiences and possibilities they already know. The challenge is to listen carefully, understand the needs behind their answers, and consider opportunities that may not emerge directly from the discussion.

For Bay City, I believe that means building on its identity while finding new ways to connect its history, local attractions, and surrounding natural areas. During the session, I proposed four ideas:

  1. Highlight the area’s rice heritage through attractions and experiences that tell its story.

  2. Explore the Texas longhorn as a recognizable symbol for the city.

  3. Position Bay City as a starting point for visits to nearby beaches and nature parks.

  4. Explore opportunities to use trains and railroad history as attractions.

These proposals are starting points rather than finished plans. Each would need further research into feasibility, cost, community support, and its connection to Bay City’s identity.

I see this project as a promising beginning. My hope is that the conversations lead to a clear direction and practical opportunities for the community. Listening to residents matters, but the real test will be how those ideas become a future people can recognize, support, and help build.

Innovation FERIA DE LEON
